Should I buy the A229 Plus or the A229 Pro?

The A229 Plus records 2K+2K (both cameras at 2560×1440). The A229 Pro records 4K+2K (front at 3840×2160). Both use Sony STARVIS 2 sensors with identical HDR quality on the rear camera. The Pro includes a CPL filter; the Plus does not. If 2K resolution meets your needs, the Plus delivers outstanding value. If you want the highest possible front resolution or the Wirecutter-recommended camera, choose the Pro.

Is 2K resolution enough for a dash cam?

For most drivers, yes. 2K (2560×1440) with Sony STARVIS 2 captures sharp detail including license plates at normal following distances. The STARVIS 2 sensor's superior dynamic range often matters more than raw resolution — a 2K STARVIS 2 camera frequently outperforms 4K cameras with older sensors in real-world conditions like nighttime driving, rain, and mixed lighting.

Does the A229 Plus 2CH support HDR on both cameras?

Yes. Both the front and rear cameras process HDR simultaneously. This is a significant advantage over many competitors that apply HDR only to the front camera, leaving the rear channel washed out by headlights or underexposed in shadows.

Can I use the A229 Plus with the RTC300 telephoto camera?

Yes. The RTC320 telephoto camera is compatible with both the A229 Plus and A229 Pro front units. It connects to the Type-C rear port, so using the telephoto replaces the standard rear camera connection. This gives you 2K wide-angle front + 2K telephoto zoom.

Is a CPL filter included with the A229 Plus?

No. Unlike the A229 Pro, the A229 Plus does not include a CPL filter in the box. It is available as an optional accessory. A CPL filter reduces dashboard reflections and windshield glare — recommended for optimal image quality, especially if you have a light-colored dashboard.

Can I upgrade the A229 Plus to a 3-channel system?

Yes. Add the optional interior camera module for 3-channel coverage: 2K front + 2K rear + 1080P interior with IR night vision. The interior camera connects to the front unit and is detected automatically. This makes the A229 Plus a budget-friendly option for rideshare drivers who need cabin documentation.

Does the A229 Plus support the same parking modes as the Pro?

Yes. The A229 Plus supports all three parking modes: buffered Auto Event Detection (15 seconds pre-event + 30 seconds post-event), Time-Lapse, and Low Bit Rate recording. All modes require the HK4 hardwire kit (sold separately). Impact-triggered videos are automatically locked.

What is the main advantage of the A229 Plus over budget dash cams?

The Sony STARVIS 2 sensor. Many budget dash cams use older or smaller sensors that struggle in low light, produce noisy nighttime footage, and blow out highlights from headlights. The A229 Plus's IMX675 delivers professional-grade dynamic range and low-light performance at a consumer price point — the same sensor technology used in the rear camera of the flagship A229 Pro.

Peace of Mind on the Road — Just Be Ready for the Install

Great camera. Absolute pain in the ass to install.

I paid $191.76 when it was on sale (I could be wrong, but I think that’s about as cheap as it gets).

The video quality is excellent and it gives real peace of mind knowing everything on the road is recorded. Running the wires and popping trim panels definitely took some patience, but once it’s installed it feels clean and almost factory-like. If you’re willing to wrestle with the install for a bit, it’s 100% worth it.

P.S. Tips:
• If you’re hardwiring it, grab a cheap multimeter. It makes finding the correct fuse much easier and keeps you from accidentally messing up your car’s electronics.

• Use a high-endurance microSD card and format it periodically to keep the camera running smoothly. I use the Samsung Pro Endurance 256GB. Buy it from a trusted seller because there are a lot of fake cards floating around.

• 2K resolution is more than enough for most people and keeps file sizes reasonable.

• Watching a good install tutorial (like ChrisFix on YouTube) before starting will save you a lot of headaches.

High Quality DashCam at a Reasonable Price

These Viofo a229 Plus front and rear DashCams are a great product with really good picture qualities, simple to use interface (including a well designed and stable app) and at a price much lower than other high end (High Cost) brands. I strongly recommend getting the Hardwire Kit so as to get the most out of the Parking Mode functions. It's dead easy to install with the supplied Fuse Tap kit. I only got the a229 plus (with the 2k front and 2k rear cameras) to put into my old 2005 Hilux ute, which is still very good quality video and pictures, but I have the a229 Pro (with the 4k front and 2k rear cameras) in my 2020 Subaru Liberty, which has very high quality video for the main front facing camera. It's a little bit more cost but probably worth the extra dollars for the higher picture/video quality. I highly recommend either one of these dashcams. Cheers Andy 👍

Amazing dash cam, easy to install and helpful accessories included. I think my favourite thing about Viofo is how great the app is for retrieving clips, it works on a high-speed wifi connection which means all the dashcam clips load on your phone within a few seconds and they’re easy to download, unlike Nextbase.

Let’s be honest: Viofo pretty much owns the dashcam game. I went for the A229 Plus because, well, it just makes sense—great quality, fair price, and it actually works as it should. No regrets. If you’re looking for a dashcam that just does its job (and does it well), this is the one.

Super easy to install. I highly recommend buying the rear view mirror connection harness from amazon. The device connects to your review mirror in a seamless way (for those that have a power connection on their review mirror). Camera works great and connects to your phone no problem. You can view the footage on your cell phone via wi-fi or cellular connection. If you have a mid sized SUV you will nee to buy the 30 foot rear cable. 20 feet is only long enough if you are running the cable through the top headliner. If you are running the cable through the bottom running board and up to your rear window you will need the longer cable. Very happy with this purchase.
