How far can the telephoto camera capture license plates?

The RTC320 telephoto with 4× optical zoom captures license plates at significantly greater distances than any wide-angle dash cam. In real-world use, plates are typically readable at 3–5 car lengths ahead, depending on lighting and plate size. The Sony STARVIS 2 sensor ensures clarity even in low light and challenging conditions.

Can I use the RTC320 telephoto with my existing A229 Pro or A229 Plus?

Yes. The RTC320 is compatible with both A229 Pro and A229 Plus front units. However, it connects to the same Type-C rear port, so adding the telephoto means disconnecting your current rear camera. You can switch between configurations as needed, but cannot use both the standard rear and telephoto simultaneously on a 2CH system.

What is the difference between the A229 Pro Tele 2CH and 3CH?

The 2CH includes front + telephoto (two forward-facing cameras). The 3CH adds a 1080P rear camera for behind-the-vehicle coverage, giving you three angles: wide front, zoomed front detail, and rear. Choose 3CH if you want rear coverage alongside the telephoto evidence capability.

Where should the telephoto camera be mounted?

The telephoto camera mounts on the front windshield near the front camera unit, pointing forward. Its narrow lens is designed to capture the road directly ahead at a magnified perspective. Position it centrally for the best license plate capture angle.

Does the telephoto camera work at night?

Yes. The RTC320 uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensor with HDR, providing excellent low-light performance. License plates remain readable under streetlight illumination, oncoming headlights, and twilight conditions. STARVIS 2 delivers approximately 2.5× more dynamic range than first-generation sensors.

Who benefits most from a telephoto dash cam?

The telephoto is ideal for fleet operators, commercial drivers, taxi and rideshare drivers, and anyone who prioritizes evidence capture. If you've ever been in a hit-and-run where the other vehicle's plate was too far away to read on standard dash cam footage, the telephoto solves exactly that problem.

I received it today. I had to order the rear camera and cable. I misread the instructions on the camera. It did not have the rear camera with it so I had to order it. It looks very well made. I had a. A129 Duo I really liked it. I put it in the car and bought the other one for the truck. They’re awesome.
