What resolution should I choose for my dash cam?

For most drivers, 2K (1440p) offers an excellent balance of image clarity and file size — license plates are readable at reasonable distances, and storage lasts longer than 4K. Choose 4K (2160p) if you need maximum detail for evidence purposes, such as fleet or commercial use, or if you want to capture fine details like distant road signs. How many channels do I need?

A 1-channel (front-only) dash cam covers the most common incident scenario — front collisions and road events. A 2-channel (front + rear) system adds protection against rear-end collisions and captures drivers who hit your parked car from behind. If you're a rideshare driver, taxi operator, or want to monitor passengers or teen drivers, a 3-channel system adds an interior camera with infrared night vision. For commercial trucks, vans, or fleet vehicles, a 4-channel system provides full 360° coverage including blind spots.

What is buffered parking mode and why does it matter?

Standard parking mode only starts recording after detecting an event (impact or motion), which means you miss the crucial seconds leading up to the incident. VIOFO's buffered parking mode continuously records video to a circular memory buffer. When an event triggers, the camera saves the buffered footage from before the event along with the recording after — giving you complete context of what happened. This requires a hardwire kit (like the VIOFO HK4 ACC cable) for continuous power with battery protection.

Should I use a microSD card or SSD storage?

MicroSD cards work well for most users and are easy to swap between devices. However, they have limited write endurance and can fail after extended continuous recording. For high-bitrate 4K recording or heavy parking mode use, the VIOFO SSD Solutions provides significantly faster write speeds, greater endurance, and more reliable performance. SSD storage is especially recommended for multi-channel setups where multiple video streams write simultaneously, only the VIOFO A329 and A329S series supports external SSD storage.

Why do VIOFO dash cams use supercapacitors instead of batteries?

Lithium batteries degrade quickly in the extreme temperatures found on car dashboards — from over 70°C (158°F) in summer sun to well below freezing in winter. Supercapacitors handle a much wider temperature range, charge and discharge faster, and last significantly longer. They provide enough power to safely save the current recording and shut down properly when power is cut, without the fire or swelling risk associated with lithium batteries in hot vehicles.

How do I install a VIOFO dash cam?

Basic installation takes about 10 minutes: mount the camera to your windshield using the included adhesive or suction mount, plug the power cable into your car's USB port or cigarette lighter, and route the cable along the headliner and A-pillar. For parking mode, install a hardwire kit (HK4 ACC cable) connecting to your vehicle's fuse box — this provides continuous power with automatic low-voltage cutoff to protect your car battery. Rear and interior cameras connect to the front unit via included cables routed through the vehicle trim.

Are VIOFO dash cams legal to use?

Dash cams are legal in most countries and U.S. states for recording while driving. Mounting placement rules vary by jurisdiction — generally the camera should not obstruct the driver's view. For interior recording (3-channel models), some regions require consent from passengers. Check your local laws regarding windshield-mounted devices and audio recording.
